The Marble Mountains – The Spiritual and Scenic Heart of Da Nang
Located just 8 kilometers southeast of Da Nang city center on the route to Hoi An, The Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) stand as one of Central Vietnam’s most iconic natural and cultural landmarks. Known locally as Non Nuoc, this cluster of five limestone and marble hills embodies not only the geological beauty of the region but also its deep spiritual heritage. For generations, the Marble Mountains have been regarded as the “soul of the land”—a place where nature, religion, and legend intertwine.

A Symbol of Nature and Spiritual Harmony
The Marble Mountains consist of five distinct peaks, each representing one of the five elements in Eastern philosophy: Kim (Metal), Moc (Wood), Thuy (Water), Hoa (Fire), and Tho (Earth). Spread across an area of about 2 square kilometers, each mountain possesses its own unique charm—different in shape, color, and texture of stone, as well as in the temples and caves hidden within.
Among them, Thuy Son (Water Mountain) is the largest and most famous. Rising 106 meters above sea level, Thuy Son features three peaks known as Tam Thai, symbolizing harmony and balance. Visitors can reach the summit by elevator or by climbing ancient stone steps, where panoramic views of Da Nang City and the East Sea await.
Temples, Caves, and Legends
The Marble Mountains are home to numerous ancient pagodas, Buddhist sanctuaries, and sacred caves, including Huyen Khong Cave, Linh Nham Cave, Van Thong Cave, Lang Hu Cave, and the Tam Thai and Linh Ung Pagodas. Each site carries layers of history and legend, reflecting the seamless blend of Cham spirituality and Vietnamese Buddhism.
Before the arrival of the Vietnamese, the Cham people once worshipped their deities within these same caves and temples. Over time, Vietnamese settlers built more pagodas and Buddhist shrines, transforming the area into a harmonious landscape of spiritual devotion and natural beauty.

A Place of Serenity and Adventure
What makes the Marble Mountains truly unique is the perfect combination of mountains and sea. After exploring caves and temples, travelers need only walk a few hundred meters to reach the pristine Non Nuoc Beach—a stretch of white sand and turquoise waves perfect for swimming and relaxation. Here, visitors can unwind, capture stunning photographs, and enjoy the peaceful meeting point of land, sky, and ocean.
Cultural Significance and Modern Development
The historical name “Non Nuoc Son” has appeared in Vietnamese records for over five centuries, and during the French colonial period, the site was called “Les Montagnes de Marbre”—The Marble Mountains. Today, this area continues to evolve, with the Marble Cultural Park currently under development to preserve the heritage while offering modern facilities for visitors.
